ASCP 40 Under Forty Honorees Reap Accolades, Career Growth

Mar 07, 2018

Ever since Carlo Ledesma, SH(ASCP)CM, MS, MT(ASCP),  was named a ASCP 40 Under Forty Top Five honoree in 2014, he has received overwhelming accolades and opportunities for career growth.  For example, a website named him one of the top 25 hematology educators in the country, and he’s been invited to lecture out of state.

“More importantly, I’ve gained respect from my local lab community. Through the power of social media, people have gotten in touch with me and said they were inspired by my story,” says Ledesma, an educator and program director at Rose State College in Midwest City, Okla.,

Tiffany Channer, MPH, MLS(ASCP)CM, another Top Five honoree, said the recognition provided wonderful exposure and was a great “talking point” on her resume. “I got a lot of recognition from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center where I worked and from my alma mater, Stoney Brook University,” said Channer. “The 40 under Forty honor led to another 40 under Forty recognition by the Network Journal and Stony Brook University's Top 40 under Forty Alumni nomination.”

The recognition has also helped propel her career forward. Today, Ms. Channer is the evening laboratory supervisor at Bayfront Medical Center, a level II trauma center in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Both Channer and Ledesma strongly encourage other young professionals to apply for the ASCP 40 Under Forty program, which recognizes ASCP pathologist, resident and laboratory professional members under age 40 for their achievements and leadership qualities that are making an impact on pathology and laboratory medicine. “The recognition is validating to us, as professionals,” says Mr. Ledesma.

Ms. Channer adds, “We, as lab professionals, need to excel.  Showing that we contribute so much to the medical profession would help elevate our stature. The other benefit is that it broadens your horizons, and the networking opportunity with others is phenomenal. Within 40 under Forty, you meet so many individuals who are pretty far along in their profession. I still correspond with the other Top Five from my year. It’s great!”

Applications for the 2018 ASCP 40 Under Forty program are due April 6. Apply now!
