One of the hallmarks of clinical practice is to repeat testing when initial test results are unexpected or do not make sense clinically. An article in the July issue of AJCP, “An Audit of Repeat Testing at an Academic Medical Center: Consistency of Order Patterns With Recommendations and Potential Cost Savings,” presents findings of a study of test overutilization, with recommendations for when it may or may not be cost-effective.
