ASCP Sets the Gold Standard for Educational Assessments

Apr 26, 2018

ASCP has a long history dedicated to education and excellence in laboratory medicine. As the leading provider of continuing education for pathologists and medical laboratory personnel, ASCP enhances the quality of the profession through comprehensive educational programs, publications, and self-assessment materials.

“ASCP leads the drive for constantly changing professional standards to enable the right people to do the right tests for the benefit of the patients. Their focus is on the care of the patient, not market share,” said Paul Elgert, CT(ASCP)IAC, Cytopathology Supervisor at NYU School of Medicine, New York City.

“They understand it is more important to train and educate all persons involved in testing for a better result; that has a greater impact on quality than to simply comply with administrative rules and regulations,” he continued. “So if you want an educational product or a product to train for minimal competencies, I would choose the product(s) from the organization that has provided it the longest and delivers it with heart. And that is ASCP.”

NYC Health + Hospitals—Bellevue has purchased assessment products from ASCP since 2006, and GYN Proficiency Testing since 2005. “ASCP slides are well validated. The NonGYN images within the Digital Image Program continue to train residents and fellows every year,” said Elgert.

ASCP is committed to ensuring a good educational experience for its customers. All glass slide materials are reviewed by a Quality Assurance/Quality Control team of Cytotechnologists to ensure that quality, well-stained cases are utilized.  The educational materials are continually re-evaluated by the ASCP Cytopathology Committee for diagnostic accuracy, relevancy, and currency.

When a customer places an order, they receive a reservation notice that notifies the customer as to when they will receive the product(s). Upon shipment of their order(s), ASCP provides the customer with a shipping schedule that details when the product shipped, when to anticipate receipt and when the materials are due back to ASCP.

“It is all laid out; there is no guess work,” said Rhonda Drexler, SCT(ASCP), CHCP, Senior Manager, Cytology Assessment and Proficiency Testing.

Diagnostic Clinic of Longview, Texas, a long-standing ASCP customer, has been purchasing the GYN and NonGYN Assessment products for the past eight years and the GYN Proficiency Testing for the past 12 years.

“The GYN Assessment program is used as educational material to help keep us on our toes through periodic testing and as an opportunity to review morphologic criteria in a didactic format,” said Mike Toole, BS, CT(ASCP)CMIAC, Cytology Supervisor. “The scores from the lab comparison reports are incorporated into the existing quality assurance (or QA) program. It is helpful that trends noted in an external benchmark program are usually similar to those seen in the labs internal QA. The laboratory performance standards and peer comparison charts from previous years have also been useful.”

Toole said his lab selected ASCP’s NonGYN Assessment program as a way to meet CLIA requirements for establishing accuracy of NonGYN cytology testing. “ASCP has been helpful in the past with questions about statistical evaluations and drawing conclusions based on our participants’ data from the assessments,” he said.
